The First Day of School.

I don't remember my first day of school as a child.
There is a vague recollection of kindergarten.
Of mounting the cement steps towards my classroom.
To learn what will sink and float.
But on the whole, not much remains.
Today, I teach.
I have my own classroom.
A classroom full of traditions and noise and discovery.
Yesterday was our first day of school.
These children will also learn what will sink and float.
How to count.
To tie their shoes.
I'm delighted to be a part of it.
These joyous years that fade to black.
